The last month or so GMail has been marking legitimate emails as SPAM – continually, including now it’s own emails!! SPAM filtering can be a complex business and there are always a certain amount of ‘false positive’ in any system but this is a failure at the basic level for many of these false positives are from ultra-high volume sources – Linked In, Facebook and so on. Today though we went from the sublime to the ridiculous when even GMail’s own email messages are being marked as SPAM! This is NOT the sort of professional service that Google tries to present to the world. It’s a systemic failure of the most basic kind, like a ballet dancer who forgot to put on her pants, or a skydiver who forgot to check they had a parachute on before they jumped, or a TV station that plays a porn feed by mistake instead of the National News. It will take a lot in my mind to gain confidence in Google technology after this last month of having to uncheck heaps of valid messages in my SPAM Folder. Reminds me of the olden-times TV character Sledgehammer – a bumbling fool with an upsized weapon who utters the immortal words “Trust me – I know what I am doing!” usually a few seconds before shooting the wrong person, breaking something or blowing up something innocent. I loved to watch Sledgehammer as he really tickled my sense of humour. Go GMail, Go!
