In previous posts I’ve raised concerns about conman Peter Vandever, initially speaking of The other side of Peter Vandever. Essentially I stated that I believe that things were not quite right with his stories & conduct and that there was another hidden darker side to the man. In a recent post I exposed him as an unrepentant and devious thief. In this post I continue sharing more examples of his blatant plagiarism within Facebook and his personal website. It’s a sad never-ending story.
Peter Vandever is a conman masquerading as a Christian Missionary. He travels the world seeking financial support, web development and photography work. He is intelligent, blogs openly about his travel, faith and personal experiences. He is however an unrepentant conman, liar and plagiarist who leaves a trail of human trauma in the many countries he visits.
Born in the Philippines, Peter was educated in the United States, and has in the last three years or so traveled between the USA, several South Pacific countries and is now [Q1, 2015] in the Philippines.
These are all facts that I have verified from personal experience and/or independent third parties whom have recounted their tales of trauma to me in various ways.
So far these are verifiable facts but at this point I move into his own story and then unverified or partially verified information.
Peter says of himself that he is open and honest.
I am Peter Vandever. I live my life in the open. (Blog)
This is quite true. He does . . . when it suits him. There are however some ugly parts of his life that he wants to remain hidden. These parts hurt others, hence this expose.
Peter tells all that he is a Christian and a Christian Ministry. I know that he has attended church in the USA and that his departure was under a cloud. I know some of the circumstances but am not willing to reveal them. It is my opinion that the church leaders had problems with him and that there were issues of integrity and pride at stake. Some of this information came out in a public forum. I hesitate to lay blame entirely on Peter in this case because he generally “has a point” but his conduct in the time that I have been observing him however clearly falls outside the general expectation of a Christian. He is certainly a mile away from Christian Missions in any shape or form as it is generally recognised. I suspect that he does have a genuine faith but with unresolved and/or psychiatric issues, how could you know? Peter claims that he has led many to the Lord. I find this hard to believe but Peter may very well do believe this, regardless of the reality. All I can say to this part of his story, is that I’m jolly glad it is not me who has to judge him at the end of his allotted time on earth!
Peter gives conflicting stories regarding his past. The general thrust of his past, according to him is that he spent time in the US Army, has been retired now and lives with a $500.00USD per month pension. People including me have searched in vain for verification of this; stories do not stack up and some claim emphatically that this is an outright lie. I suspect that it is, or if it is true then he is probably suffering from a physical or psychiatric issues relating to the Gulf war. My take (if asked to bet) would be that it is a fabrication.
He has claimed to be a senior person in the IT space in the Philippines and has on many occasions ‘talked big’. I have been unable to verify ANY of his “big talk” claims. I suspect therefore that this is just ego-talk and that he has been involved in Internet connectivity business however his historical role is largely exaggerated.
Peter is careful not to write specifics on his blogs about this past but is more careless in online forums and Social Media. I’ve been told many times that his stories do not stack up. I’ve been able to verify some falsehoods about the past easily but not all. Many call him a fruit-loop, basket-case, special-case, nutter and worse!
Peter has an extensive digital footprint with multiple Facebook accounts, frequent new websites and is a moderately prolific blogger. His business reputation is poor with all people who have reported to me expressing some form of dissatisfaction with his interactions and business conduct. I do not believe that he has done much commercial work.
His technology of choice is Word Press with strong use of Plugins. I’d consider his end products mid-range and commercially acceptable. I consider his writing to be intelligent, lucid, containing good [apparently] original thought and genuine. He wears his heart on his sleeve a little more than many would do, which is an indicator to me of difficulty/inability to measure emotional realities and human boundaries. Most people would apologise and wouldn’t want to wind victims up. Peter seems not to pull any punches, telling the victim above to “move on” – whew!
He claims a high level of technical expertise but I have yet to see evidence of this. I’d estimate his IT skills to be average-to-high but I don’t actually know. He has made some serious errors of judgement in both a technical and strategic sense.
Plagiarism, Passing Off, P*ssing Off
Peter is a long-term plagiarist and has clearly no compunction about stealing others’ photographs and publishing them in his own name. Recent Facebook complaints in his current country of domicile (the Philippines) have highlighted this theft but it has been going on longer, probably back to the time that he started promoting himself as a photographer, most likely even before that.
In my previous post about Peter (Peter Vandever, now outed as a thief), I demonstrated his hot-linking form of theft from images used on his main website and posted examples of plagiarism from another professional photographer.
I continue now with two more examples of outright theft, lies and cover-up. I start with a Facebook claim to fame. I then demonstrate a deliberate theft in a more traditional manner – scraping a high resolution photograph, cropping it and superimposing his personal name onto the image.
This photograph was taken by a Canadian photographer Myriam Tibeault in Quebec who took photos of her friend Laurence. I have verified this myself personally and Myriam is happy for me to take the matter further.
The shot above is from Peter Vandever’s Facebook page. He says:
Peter A Vandever Another shot from last week
This is of course a lie and his discussion below says [click the image to read it full size]:
Asel Perez wow! looks like kill bill! whos she Peter? where did you find her?
February 11 at 8:44pm
Peter A Vandever She is a missionary here.
February 11 at 8:44pm
Asel Perez i thot shes the actress – cool pic! Where’s she missionary at? i hope everythings ok
February 11 at 9:34pm
Asel Perez has ‘liked’ Peter A Vandever on Facebook although methinks she, like many of the 2000+ others, might be disassociating from him very shortly!
Peter stole two photos of Laurence, another one here showing the original and the stolen one.
Now this photographer Myriam did not know Peter, is in another country and was decidedly upset when informed. Three people informed her of the theft. she attempted to contact Peter twice.
Here’s one of her complaints
He ignored her.
The subject in the photo Laurence also tried to contact Peter. He ignored her too.
I tracked the ‘outing‘ backwards receiving cooperation all the way and verified the method by which Peter was outed.
The stories align.
Here’s a response from Peter that indicates that things seem to have gotten nasty.
The fact that Peter has basically told the victim to “get over it” and referred to his theft as “questionable content” is probably the reason the photographers’ blood was boiling.
Peter Vandever is a photograph thief, stealing photos from other photographers, passing them off as his own, lying about the subject and covering up his conduct, ignoring pleas for communications from aggrieved parties in multiple instances. On top of that he is clearly unrepentant.
This is not a recent phenomena either. In 2001 photographer Graham Crumb took this stunning shot of an elderly Samoan man drinking ava.
He published the photo in high resolution without watermarking but with very clear conditions for use under Creative Commons Share and Share alike rules. This is what the photographer says on his own page:
Photos from here and there, mostly in the South Pacific.
This site serves mostly to document the miracle of the mundane.
All content on this site may be used by others, subject to a Creative Commons license. Briefly, you’re free to share this content, or to alter it for your purposes, but you need to attribute the photo to me, and if you distribute the results, it must be under the same terms as the original (i.e. this) license. See this page for details.
High resolution versions of these photos are available on demand, subject to additional licensing constraints. Contact me for details. [Emphasis added]
These are the actual rules that Graham released his image under:
Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use. [Emphasis added]
Graham’s, evidence is here. He has every right to sue Peter Vandever for plagiarism and may use this post as evidence. I and others have further evidence more suitable for litigation purposes offline should he wish to press charges.
A photo of this calibre is worth suing for. Peter steals some of the best of course!
There’s more . . . much more and it goes on . . . and on . . . and on.
In my next post in this exposure of Peter Vandever’s photography theft I will be sharing examples of his mass plagiarism and misrepresentation in some of his other commercial websites. It’s not pretty. He’s attempted to hide this plagiarism too but he’s not THAT smart. He’s made some basic errors and I will be publishing the evidence.
I also give my thoughts in regards to Cognitive Dissonance, the capacity to simultaneously steal, cover-up, believe that you’re a ‘good guy’ and preach the name of Jesus.
Peter does all four without a blink of an eyelid.
