In this short post I explain why people in power deceive, using the King Country corruption as examples. In earlier posts I shared how my report exposed the Ruapehu District Council’s top dogs misrepresenting facts to the Lotto Grants Board. In this post I go further and produce the documents that show the detail of these lies, and incorporate this into commentary on why deception occurs. Enjoy.
Politicians play politics, just like a preacher preaches, a writer writes, a dog barks, or a baby cries.
The art of politics is to gain support of the majority – generally 51% of the vote is sufficient to carry the day. This system is called democracy and while immoral and accursed in scripture, it is universally worshiped in the modern age, widely seen as “the worst form of government – except for all the rest!” That’s a lie too but we’ll leave that topic for another day.
From the get-go, the democratic system encourages deception, for the ambitious are baited into using the power offered to them for personal gain. This may not be riches directly, but it often is. More common though is the opportunity that comes from having power. Most people when gaining power use it, and that power is always used over others. We can spend their money, legislate to control them, and engineer things to get what we want.
In local government this is outworked through the setting of rates; the control of parks, dogs, and private lives through bylaws and personal benefit can come to the clever through the awarding of contracts to those that we know or prefer. There is virtually unlimited opportunity for those in power to game the system. Don’t think for a minute that those who can won’t – they do, and it is normal. It’s human nature to look after self.
The interesting thing to me, and a large part of what I do exposing crooks, crims & crazies is based on this knowledge, God doesn’t fight evil. He simply lets it implode. His way is to let evil have it’s day, but He seeks to share the truth then let us make wise decisions individually.
The pinnacle of this is the example of the Man who had all the Power – Christ. He could have zapped His accusers into oblivion within the time of a blink but He chose not to. Instead He simply trusted that in due course as His followers witnessed then His word would prevail.
In the political environment we get the leadership we deserve. When we entrust people with personal agendas to rule us through voting them into power, we get the consequences of being led by manipulators and we MUST then expect to be deceived. Lying then, by politicians is the norm, setup systemically. Speaking the truth is a direct confrontation to the power systems of the day.
The Local Context
In Taumarunui I have ‘nailed’ mayor Don Cameron as rude, but there were two concerns he had when being confronted that are worthy of explanation. This first pushback from Don came when he bristled at my accusation that his CEO was dishonest. Understand that the Mayor and the CEO work closely on a daily basis. While Council employs the CEO, the RDC in practice does, supports and says what the CEO wants. Likewise the Mayor.
The second concern that Don Cameron showed to me was when he expressed contempt that standing against the RDC’s Lotto Grant Application would not gain public support. By this he was showing his concern that the people wanted the Lotto money because certain people within the RDC wanted it; RDC had gone all out to get it; they relied on it; they expected it. Me coming along and saying, “Hang on a minute! This is all full of BS, and by the way it’s never going to happen!” was, to Don, a losing political stance.
So we have two issues that the RDC leadership are concerned about – proof coming out that the CEO can and does lie, and political expediency – backing a winner and avoiding a loser. Watch now, as RDC either ignore their much vaunted application (now failed) or back pedals and the spin starts when the news finally comes out that the Lotto grant was not approved. Now it should be noted that I called the application “fatally flawed, ill-advised, amateurish and containing mistruth/deception” and didn’t try to stop the grant application per se, even though I don’t like the idea of a supposed multi-million dollar project being funded from gambling.
So now to the proof of deception and my take of why it occurred.
In Q3/4 2018, Ron Cooke and Audrey Walker approached RDC CEO, Clive Manley to discuss allocating the top floor of the Railway Station for the purposes of housing their various operations. The Museum Trust had recently sold The Memory Bank and they were in the process of kicking Ron out. Both Ron and Audrey came away from that meeting clear in their minds that the upstairs area (which would have been perfect) was not an option. It was agreed by all three parties present that this area was not available was because the RDC’s lease from KiwiRail prevented commercial activities. There was also an issue of timing – Clive simply didn’t know what he wanted to do with the upstairs area, and the Lotto application had yet to be developed and lodged.
This was all confirmed again in my presence with a meeting in 2019 with Clive Manley who again stated that the RDC lease from KiwiRail prevented commercial activity. Audrey Walker also confirmed the nature of their previous meeting with Clive. Again, after my report exposing RDC’s dodgy Lotto application Clive Manley met with Ron Cooke and me and we discussed how the top area had “miraculously” become available for Ron to use but that commercial activity was not permitted.
But . . . I secured a copy of the actual Lease Agreement between RDC and KiwiRail, signed by KiwiRail and guess what?
It’s a standard ‘COMMERCIAL‘ lease! The only prohibition is on accommodation. (You can see this in the First Schedule, P3 which is referred to in the actual applicable Clause 8.1, Page 12). SNAP!
OMG! Liar, liar, officialdom, pants on fire!
Again on 8 May 2019, Ron Cooke and I were called to a meeting at the council offices with Clive Manley, Don Cameron and a facilitator who suggested that the contested $50k given (actually only pledged) by the Taumarunui Museum Trust to RDC shouldn’t be in the Lotto application. She said at least twice, if not three or more times, “Just insert the word ‘contested’ into the grant application and all will be OK!” but Clive repeatedly and firmly said, “No!”
But the very next morning, before 10.00am in fact, Rick Pearson is busy writing to Lotto informing them that the $50k is now, totally withdrawn! The proof is here. But it gets worse because Rick tells two more porkies when he claims, “all information was presented in good faith with this new matter arising subsequent to our application”. Oh no, no, no it most certainly wasn’t sir! You were all caught with your pants down by an investigative blogger right on your tail. It was a deliberate deception and known VERY WELL long before your ‘dodgy’ application was even written, let alone signed off and submitted!
Shame! Why do people lie and deceive like this?
It’s because of money and power. Clive Manley was caught out lying to Lotto, which I detailed in my report issued to Mayor Don Cameron. He used the money that the Taumarunui Museum Trust promised to RDC to try to show Lotto that they had community support for their project, and he used Ron’s needs for housing of his photograph and archives collections to bolster his funding application to Lotto – more deception and now he has been shown to have manipulated Ron and Audrey over the claimed ‘fact’ that they couldn’t put a commercial operation upstairs!
The worst part about lies and deception from politicians is that nine times out of ten they never fess up; they lie more; they blame the whistleblower and that makes things worse for the little guys. Fortunately some of us have the balls to speak it like it is and can take the ad hominems that always eventuate!
In the next post in this series I give advice to others who are fighting corruption in the King Country, getting down and dirty with practical advice, showing how I secure and work with facts and apply logic; how to bait the crooks and get what you want by playing them at their own game.
